VOLUNTEER
Since 2001, more than 45,000 hours of volunteer time have been invested at The Garage. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization. We couldn’t exist without the people who share their time and hearts at The Garage. Volunteers help us with everything from tutoring and mentoring to fundraising and carpentry – and we appreciate all of it!
Here are a couple ways to get involved:
Be an After School Volunteer:
Building relationships is the key to our success with students. Get to know our teens by helping out with after school activities, becoming the familiar face at the sign-in table, or initiating a round of Scrabble. After school volunteers can take relationships further by becoming mentors or sharing their own talents and interests to students by leading workshops, enrichment activities, and field trips.
Be a Mentor:
Through our community-based mentoring program, we encourage each of our students to experience a nurturing one-to-one relationship with an adult mentor and the deeper level of support that relationship brings. Volunteer mentors meet weekly with students to build relationships, complete school assignments, set and achieve goals, and make positive life choices. Mentors and students alike benefit from the meaningful connections made over a study session, baseball game, or a slice of pizza.
Be a Tutor:
We tap into the potential of every student by providing the extra resources and support they need to thrive beyond after school hours. Volunteer tutors help instill the value of learning and the confidence to pursue academic or vocational goals. Tutoring takes many forms: homework help with higher-level math and science, general help with study skills and organization or guidance in setting and achieving academic goals. Tutors are key to helping our students graduate from high school and enter college or another post-secondary opportunity.
Be a Small Projects Volunteer:
Some volunteers prefer to use their talents in more behind-the-scenes ways like building a bookcase, repairing our plumbing, or assisting crews on a cleaning day. Small projects volunteers allow us to keep our buildings and programs running smoothly.
