Academics and Tutoring

The Academic Program at The Garage provides students with an opportunity for students to get help with their homework and tutoring support as well as daily academic enrichment activities which provide additional learning experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM).

The Tutoring Program offers one-on-one support, general homework help, assistance with college and job applications and a fully-equipped Mac computer lab for middle and high school students, all of which improve academic motivation and school performance. Volunteer tutors are matched with students to provide individualized homework help in specific subject areas, including English language assistance.

The Garage employs an incentive system, The Garage Cafe, to instill motivation and to teach students persistence towards a goal. Students earn points for completing homework and other activities, which they can then use to purchase snacks and drinks.

Strong relationships with area schools permit parents to have their children’s report cards sent directly to The Garage to maintain academic progress. Staff meet with students regularly to review and maintain academic goals, trouble-shoot difficult situations, and encourage students to stay motivated to do well in school and plan for post-secondary success.
