A Student’s Journey, Made Possible by You
Angel first joined The Garage as an 8th grader, after her mom sought a safe space for her to manage the social anxiety she developed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many teens, Angel was initially resistant to the programs. She described herself as being in a dark place and feeling the need for change. But over time, that resistance shifted—first into appreciation, and then into a deep connection with The Garage and everything it offered.
Since then, Angel has participated in nearly every program at The Garage. She enjoyed trying new activities—from unfamiliar games and outdoor adventures to arts and crafts, career exploration through Career Compass, and more. Most importantly, she found joy in building meaningful relationships—with peers, mentors, and community members, as well as with future career opportunities. Her mom, Chavon, watched with pride as her daughter’s confidence blossomed. “Being part of The Garage helped Angel because it forced her to interact with people, including people she didn’t know,” she explains.
In 2025, Angel joined nine of her Garage peers at the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) Conference. USHLI’s mission is to advance the principles of democracy and empower the Hispanic community and other marginalized groups through education, leadership, research, and civic engagement. For Angel, the experience was transformative:
“I got a lot of info and it was very empowering and eye-opening. It helped me grow my leadership skills and made me think about the world in ways I never had before.”
Angel graduated from Avon Grove Charter School in 2025 and will be attending Millersville University this fall to pursue a degree in psychology.
Angel has left a lasting impression on our team—and we are honored to have played a role in her growth.
“I wouldn’t be the person I am now without The Garage.”
